I’m mad at myself.
When word broke that Green Bay Packers’ front-office whiz Eliot Wolf was bypassed for the general manager seat for the storied organization, a light came on. Then, it was turned off by the report that Wolf was likely going to join John Dorsey’s staff with the Cleveland Browns.
There’s goes the Wolf-to-Oakland possibility, I told myself during this crazy Jon Gruden coverage train. But I should have tweeted my thoughts. I usually do. If you know me, expressing my opinions is often not a problem.
But I blew it.
Tuesday, during the eye of the Gruden storm, there were reports that the Raiders had interest in Wolf. See, Bill? Then, Oakland general manager Reggie McKenzie told the Las Vegas Review-Journal Wolf is going to interview with the Raiders for a job Thursday.
Of course. It makes perfect sense.
It’s so perfect that McKenzie admitted to the Vegas paper that it won’t be much of an interview because he is so familiar with Wolf.
Eliot Wolf is the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer front-office man Ron Wolf. Wolf was a top lieutenant to the late Al Davis for years in addition to having a long career as the Packers’ general manager. So, Eliot Wolf, who was considered a bright football mind as a teenager, could go work for another of his dad’s old teams.
Again, perfect sense.
There are more reasons why it’s a great fit. Both Gruden and McKenzie worked for Ron Wolf in Green Bay. Also, Gruden will want to add to his front office. Adding a mind like wolf would only add to a strong start to the offseason.
Will Wolf be joining the Raiders? Well, it’s probably up to him. By all accounts, he will have his choice of staying with the Packers or going to the Browns or Raiders. I would think Green Bay is running third in this three-horse race. Why would he stay somewhere who bypassed him?
So, if it comes down to the Browns or Raiders, Wolf will have to make a decision. There is are pro and cons to each job.
Going to Cleveland with Dorsey, another Green Bay alum, would a chance to be at the ground floor of a program. The Browns can only go up. In Oakland, Wolf would have a chance to win big sooner. But if he is close to McKenzie, there is no guarantee how long McKenzie will be in Oakland with Gruden having the pull that comes with a $100 million deal.
Whatever happens, Wolf can’t go wrong with going to Oakland. I wish I would have told you that earlier.

This is who I thought should have gotten the job when MD hired RM.
I do think that if MD had fired RM after hiring Gruden, Wolf would have been the candidate to replace RM.
