The Jacksonville Jaguars solved one of their most-pressing issues this offseason by signing quarterback Blake Bortles to a three-year contract extension, the first domino to fall from the 2014 draft class’ first-rounders. The news no doubt caught the attention of Raiders defensive end Khalil Mack and his agent. The Raiders and Mack are at the
I hope it helps the negotiations.
I have said this previously, I think it does nothing but help our Raiders to know exactly how much Mack’s cap hit will be.
And then to know how much more we have available to spend on key FAs.
The draft money does not enter into it, that money are already allocated.
I’m not even sure how this article makes sense. All the great info you put out but this must be just a filler article. Bortles is terrible & got a contract reflecting that?? Win/win for player team. Mack is one of the most dominating & game changing defensive players in the league. Bortles contract to me has no relevance on Mack’s contract? Suh & Miller contracts are the true barometer.
Maybe Mr. Davis, Mr. Gruden, and Mr. McKenzie should start thinking about a novel idea: player contracts structured like their coach’s. No telling what the fine print says in Gruden’s contract; I’m sure each side has outs and many other variables. It’s one thing for both sides to talk about sticking with each other long term. Gruden’s contract is the only one i ever heard of trying to put that concept to paper.
Surely, Gruden doesn’t get paid for 10 years if he turns out to be a lousy coach … there has to be qualifiers, etc. in the contract. I’m sure that Gruden can decide that he must have been nuts to take on this job and leave the cushy one behind. The 10 year commitments both ways are surely not trivial, but they are also surely a “letter of intent”, rather than an absolute handcuffing of Mark Davis to Jon Gruden. Longer term player contracts can (already are) be somewhat similar.
One of the really great things that Reggie has done has kept the roster flexible and cap management friendly. So, I wouldn’t blow that concept up
But, wouldn’t it be something if a maverick owner said “hey. I made a 10 year commitment to my coach and he made one to me. I want to start doing the same for our key Raider-for-life guys”.
Probably wouldn’t happen, but wouldn’t it be cool? And, might it make Mark Davis a bit more of a chip off the old block to come up with something crazy like that?
if continuity really is a big deal in building a lasting culture of winning, maybe that should be the overriding factor in everything done from one end of the organization to the other.
Olawale signed to 3 year extension! Gruden likes what he sees. Spider 2 y= olawale! Expect him to be a bigger part of game plans under gruden.
* actually don’t know why that showed up on my feed as if it was something new; Raiders post from 2+ years ago. Guess he’ll be on a end-of-contract year as of now
I understand that QB is such an important position, but I believe that Mack is worth more than Carr. Still, would be nice to get the extension done quickly so that (as others have said) the Raiders know what their cap looks like for this year.
These contracts are getting ridiculous. I am glad I am not a GM.
