I know we’re past the free-agent dream scenario portion of the offseason. We’re live and free agency has been exploding full of big-money deals. The Oakland Raiders have been among the quietest teams in the league and it’s for a reason. They don’t have a lot of dough and they are saving for a mega Khalil Mack deal.
Yet, Oakland needs to get better and they will need to spend at some point to get better.
I have come up with the perfect dream get – Mr. Honey Badger. Indeed, Tyrann Mathieu is a free man.
The Arizona Cardinals released Honey earlier today. The main reasons were a tight salary cap and a poor scheme fit with the new staff. Any player who is released comes with some warning signs. It seems, though, Mathieu’s only issue is an injury history. Last season was the only time in his five-season Arizona career than he played a full slate.
Mathieu can still excel in the right system. There is so much to like. He will be just 26 in May. He is versatile. He is a playmaker. He is a passionate player, who wants to win,
He’d be perfect for the Raiders. He could even fix their cornerback issues. The only starter Oakland has at the spot is 2017 first-round pick Gareon Conley and he’s played just two games. Mathieu can move around and help anywhere in the secondary, really.
What an elixir for a unit that needs so much help and needs explosion. Yes, there will be a market for him and yes, he won’t be cheap.
But for my money, I’d rather have The Badger in a Raiders’ uniform than No 3 receiver Jordy Nelson (who is visiting the team now), defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh or Cincinnati linebacker Vontaze Burfict. There was a report that the Raiders are talking to the Bengals about a trade for Burfict, but, thus far, that report has been debunked.
What is not bunk, though, is the idea of Mathieu wearing the Silver and black. In fact, it’s my favorite idea of free agency thus far.
