Well, looky here, your Oakland Raiders appear to have themselves a pair of starting cornerbacks for Week 1 of the regular season.
Can I get an ‘amen?’
You’re a Raiders fan, so I don’t have to remind you the search for quality cornerback play has been a thorn in the side of general manager Reggie McKenzie for his entire six-year run. He’s tried and tried and it’s been a futile endeavor. An example of this is the fact that David Amerson and Sean Smith, who entered last season as the starting cornerbacks, were both kicked to this curb this winter.
Now, the Raiders hope the answer is a Gareon Conley-Rashaan Melvin duo.
The Raiders signed Melvin to a one-year $6.5 million deal Friday.
At the risk of being a party pooper, the Raiders didn’t just sign Deion Sanders. This wasn’t considered a great free-agency group and many cornerbacks were scooped up before Melvin. The fact that he signed a one-year deal suggests he didn’t have a lot of suitors. Oh, and another thing, his previous team, the Colts, have the second-most salary-cap room in the league and didn’t find the desire to give him a bigger deal.
Now, don’t get me wrong. Melvin can help the Raiders. He is big, good in coverage and feisty. He won’t be spectacular, but the Raiders, at this point, just need a professional corner in place.
He should give the Raiders that much.
Conley is a wild card. He has true No.1 corner ability. He must stay healthy, keep focused and show it. The 2017 first-round pick played just two games last season. So, there is potential for Conley and Melvin to be a nice pair next year.
They also agreed to terms on a one-year deal with journeymen backup Shareece Wright. So, the group is starting to fill out. It’s not great, but it’s better than it was. It’s also probably good enough for Oakland to wait to look at cornerback later in the draft while addressing other need areas earlier in the draft.
Again, Oakland may not be out of the cornerback woods, but it may be better than 2017. Well, it better be.
Almost to a point where they can draft best available instead of filling holes. Is there a way we can get a salary cap update after all these signings?
Work in progress.
Overall, Especially 4 a brand new site, This web source gets an “A’. . Keep up the great work. (It cracks me up the petty complaints about Nothing of real significance.) Y’aLL are offering a Helluva bargain!! ? Sincerely, RN4LIFE. *GODSPEED*
You must do better with your writing if you want people to pay for this.
Come now, the words weren’t misspelled, they were just missing, extra or wrong. Only about half a dozen glaring ones in a short article. Ok, I’m reaching in his defense. Yeah, it needs to improve.
I’m going to continue to back up Bill and Steve, who cares people. I want more articles, only reason I pay for this site. I’d rather them pop out 7-10 articles a day and see a couple of mistakes on each article then to get a few really reviewed and proofread articles.
Don’t leave out Gilchrist bill I think that could be a sneaky good signing as well
AMEN * Gilchrist is a High motor starter/ animal And a great locker room presence!!
Thanks Bill!!
Two publications , Including ‘PFF’ have Rashaad Melvin rated higher (the 17th best CB in the NFL, to be precise). .Than T.J.Carrie. . a SURE Upgrade & a Scrapper!!
Why does this website Falsely say I’m trying to Post a Duplicate? *Two publications , Including ‘PFF’ have Rashaad Melvin rated higher (the 17th best CB in the NFL, to be precise).Than T.J.Carrie.
OOOPS. . MR.RASHAAN MELVIN *Not Rashaad .
It’s given me That Inaccurate message with 3 prior attempts to post. I ignored it hoping it was a “Glitch” that would be fixed. *But I had to slightly Reword the above one (that seems like it posted) Thanks 4 this website!
Awesome content, finally a good website with great insider knowledge
Thanks, Erik,
That’s nice of you to say, but it’s important to note that it works both ways. We are nothing without the loyalty and support of you and the many, many others who have chosen to ride with us on this fun, wild journey. It’s not stopping anytime soon, either. Keep the feedback coming. Thanks again.

For all those who take issue with misspelled words or exact gammar, you know what the story is about and the meaning of said words. Pobodys nerfect.
I hope the signings help us. But I am not holding my breath. RMs 1 yr CB signings have been less than perfect.
If they went hard after this guy, as reports state, why not give him at least a 2 yr deal?
If everything goes great and he proves himself this season as a very good CB, RM wont re-sign him because we either don’t have the money or for some other reason. That is RMs track record.
By going hard after the guy = Melvin
Thanks, everyone.
