I was a little surprised this did not happen earlier. I figured after hiring the DC it made perfect sense.
A veteran Gruden appreciates and someone who can help teach Guenther’s system.
I read earlier that Gilchrist could play the slot in certain situations. Maybe a package of having 3 S’s out there?
As stated, Gruden wants as much competition out there as possible. And the S market has been soft, Nelson likely did not get offers from other teams.
Plus, even if he gets cut at the end of preseason, he’s still been around the entire offseason program and minicamps to help teach his younger teammates the system.
It is kind of like a baseball team bringing in a special instructor for spring training only this one might still contribute in real games.
