From all the way back to Earl Morrall, the value of a backup quarterback can’t be overstated. Morrall is, perhaps, regarded as the prototypical backup based upon his work as the insurance policy to the likes of Bob Griese, Y.A. Tittle, Fran Tarkenton, Johnny Unitas and Len Dawson. Morrall became best known for replacing Griese
When it comes to QBs, the biggest edge is Gruden.
We all know he loves his QBs.
All will be taught the system and whoever is the backup, he will be ready to play.
That said, lets hope we don’t have to face the situation of our backup being needed.
I would tend to agree. I recall a presser by Derek Carr after the 2016 season where he essentially said that he has to let the backups get more reps throughout the season so that they are better prepared to handle QB duties in his absence (I am paraphrasing). I got the sense from the statement that Carr was a bit like Peyton in that he took all the reps in practice possible. I think it also helps that EJ Manual had more quality than Matt McGloin. Still wondering about Connor Cook, though!
