On the day their rookies make their minicamp debut, the Raiders did some housekeeping.
The biggest news was the release of linebacker Cory James. He was waived after failing his physical. He dealt with injuries last year. James was a sixth-round pick in 2016. In a perfect scenario, James was going to vie to start this year. He made nine starts last season and five starts as a rookie. In the end, he is another drafted linebacker who couldn’t stick in Oakland.
The Raiders also cut defensive lineman Armonty Bryant with a non-football illness. He was signed off the street earlier this offseason. He was always a long shot to make the team.
The Raiders also announced their signed six undrafted free agents (which is a small class). Below is the Raiders’ press release and their bios on the players:
Baugh, Marcus TE 6-4 247 Ohio State
Blacknall, Saeed WR 6-2 208 Penn State
Cabinda, Jason LB 6-1 243 Penn State
Officer, Alex C 6-3 331 Pittsburgh
Pineiro, Eddy K 6-0 185 Florida
Sharga, Nick FB 6-1 241 Temple
Baugh: Played four years at Ohio State, seeing action in 52 games with 29 starts…Recorded 55 career receptions for 607 yards (11.0 avg.) with eight TDs…Earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention accolades twice…Reception total ranks ninth all-time among Ohio State tight ends, while TD total ranks seventh.
Blacknall: Played four years at Penn State, appearing in 48 games with 15 starts…Totaled 50 career receptions for 979 yards (19.6 avg.) with seven TDs…Three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
Cabinda: Played four years at Penn State, seeing action in 43 games with 36 starts…Finished career ranked ninth on Penn State’s all-time list with 286 tackles (115 solo)…Also totaled six career sacks, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, 11 passes defensed and one INT.
Officer: Played four years at Pittsburgh, playing in 51 games with 48 starts…Saw action at center and both left and right guard…Finished collegiate career with a streak of 46 straight starts.
Pineiro: Played two years at Florida, appearing in 24 games…Connected on 29 of his final 30 field goal attempts…Finished career 38-for-43 on field goal attempts, setting the Florida record for career field goal percentage (88.4)…Field goal total ranked sixth in Florida history…Connected on 16 straight field goals to end career, tied for the second-longest streak in program history.
Sharga: Played three years at Temple, seeing action in 41 games…Played both fullback and linebacker at Temple…Totaled 150 career rushing yards on 21 carries with one TD…Added two career receptions for six yards…Defensively, totaled 30 career tackles (16 solo) with one tackle for loss.
I think Pineiro is the best bet to stick of this group. He was a stud at Florida. He will push incumbent Giorgio Tavecchio hard.
