Derek Carr is one of the more intriguing NFL players to watch in 2018. In his third NFL season, 2016, Carr was a legitimate MVP candidate. He was tremendous. Then, last year, Carr took a significant step back. There were times in which Carr looked lost and he looked like he was a backup playing

I agree he is average at best at this point in his career. He will need to step it up this year, though. You can’t be average with that kind of contract. I appreciate that he is a high character guy. He certainly has the physical and mental tools. Everything I hear is that he is also a hard worker. So, maybe that will pay off this year with a better coaching staff around him and a motivated team wanting to prove that last year was an anomaly. It will be fun to see what happens.

    Mariota and Luck? Really?

Mariota has yet to play a 16 game season. The stats don’t support Mariota being ranked higher. TDs 58, INTs 34, COMP 61.8%.

Luck may never be the player he was. Has not played a snap since late in the 2016 season. Prior to that he was injured for more than half the season in 2015. TDs 132, INTs 68, COMP 59.2%.

    Carr’s TDs 103 INTs 44, COMP 61.3%

I don’t see SB winning games for either Luck or Mariota.

We will find out soon enough what Carr is made of. Gruden does not take it easy on his QBs.

QBs get paid. The numbers get higher and higher each season. Same goes for guys who can rush those QBs.

Ditto that. I was going to write something similar. Not sure how many 2016 MVP candidates are listed in the same category as Carr

Agreed. No way is Mariota ahead of Carr

In addition to Mariotta, I’m not convinced that Cousins or Wentz are better. Cousins is good, but is he elite? Wentz looks the part and was having a great season, but not sure if his body of work so far is better than Carr’s. I think after this season, we’ll know if 2016 was a fluke, or if 2017 was the fluke.

I do think D.C. has what it takes to be a top 10 QB. 2018 will tell us a lot

Mariota? Not even close. And Luck has to play to be considered better than Carr at this point.

One other quibble; everyone understandably talks about 2016 when it comes to Carr, and it makes him sound like a one-season-wonder. He had a promising rookie year on a team without much talent, and was a legit Pro Bowl-level QB in 2015 too.
