Raiders head coach Jon Gruden has had nine years to figure out how he wanted to run a football team again, after earlier stints with the Raiders and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Nearly eight months in to his second go-round, Gruden has displayed plenty of new wrinkles. Of particular note, Gruden has decided that he

It’s fine balance – getting your starters like Carr ready yet not exposing them to needless hits

Hope the “Carr” is ready to go week 1

Given the garbage play from our two back up QBs it makes sense to prioritize keeping Carr healthy and not playing him in meaningless games.
Maybe we’ll see a new QB on Thursday because Cook and Manuel have shown things are ugly with them on the field……

As stated, Gruden has had plenty of time to figure out how he wants to run the team.

What he needs to see and what he does not.

He also knows who most of the starting lineups will be, on O and D.

The questions come at backup spots. Still plenty of questions there. Especially QB.

Carr is ready to go. There is no evidence to think otherwise.

We will find out for sure in the opener.

Until then, expect to see Carr in practice and nothing else.

I understand the thinking, but Carr did not look sharp. He badly underthrew the ball to Coop and couldn’t get out of the pocket when Penn was pushed back into him. Seems to me that when Carr gets pressure, he panics rather than makes a play with his legs like he did two years ago. Although, the backups definitely need more work. They looked awful.

I agree with that assessment too. It seems like he’s got happy feet back there in the pocket. In the first game it was similar when he tried to hit Bryant deep. If he puts it out there for Bryant to run under it we have a touchdown. Instead it seemed like he felt phantom pressure and threw it up for grabs. I saw that often last year; as well as him checking down way early in the play. I get it! When you get hurt two years in a row you don’t want to go through that again. The fact is as bad as our right tackle situation was we were in the bottom five of giving up sacks and pressures, he’s got to trust his line. It looks like our D is going to be much improved; so if we get solid QB play with the weapons we have look out.
