I get that the Derek Carr comments by new general manager Mike Mayock made the big headlines from the NFL combine Wednesday. However, to me, there was a bigger newsworthy comment made by the GM. Tight end Jared Cook may have played his final game as a Raider. Cook is the Raiders’ most significant free
I fail to see the downside of at least giving him an offer.
Surely a team has to show some sign of intent to keep its best players if it’s going to be viable and have a reasonable prospect of attracting quality players to improve the mix?
I know we are in media down time, silly season but following on from rumours about dealing KO & (ludicrously) Rodney Hudson, just who does Gruden rate as worth keeping?
Looks like we’ll be heading to Vegas with an expansion team type roster: loads of draft picks high on potential and FAs that nobody else thinks enough of to keep.
Cook played really well on a poor team last year: at least talk with the guy to show we want to try to keep good players, even if they decide to follow the money elsewhere.
I commented around the time of the Mack trade that i thought maybe Gruden had come back to take revenge on the Raiders for trading him. That was meant as a joke but now I’m not so sure…..
Once a veteran like Cook hits FA, its very unlikely he’s coming back to the Raiders. Before we bash Gruden, do we even know what discussions have transpired between Cook’s agent and Raiders? Could his asking price be too high?
Raiders will need to draft a TE or pick up a TE in FA. Or do both….
$100 million dollar man strikes again. This is getting predictable. It’s absolutely comical if Gruden and Mayock think they are going to build this team solely on the draft and free agency while getting rid of every single productive player on the current roster. That will get you 2-14 next season. Good luck attracting anybody to this team via free agency with the worst roster in the league…by a long shot. Guys want to make money but they also want some opportunity to compete and win.
I am not surprised by this, but I really wish there was some semblance of a plan to move forward. The only plan I see is that the team is keeping Carr (maybe) and getting rid of everyone else. In this league and especially in the AFC West, the TE position is pretty important. I agree with Vet, why not at least make him an offer?
