Jon Gruden and the Raiders have virtually no shot at getting their hands on Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence in the 2021 draft. That places a premium on snaring one of the three standout quarterbacks in the upcoming draft if Gruden wants to move on from Derek Carr soon. As always, the biggest issue is finding
I hate saying they have no chance at Lawrence, because things can always go terribly wrong.
If we do take a QB in the first round, its possible that some team might give us a 2nd or 3rd rounder for Carr.
I think Fromm could be a target after the first round. And don’t discount Love if he is still there, something tells me he just might be they type of QB Gruden would love to try out.
Hurts and Perkins could also be on the radar with one of our 3rd round picks.
I think many of us where hopeful that Carr was going to take that huge step this season. If Gruden opts to not replace him, maybe we get that next season with better WRs, something many have clamored for, and a much more productive D.
I agree they have no chance at Lawrence, since that means something goes terribly wrong in the 2020 season or they move on from Carr and tank. Unlikely that Mark Davis wants to tank in his inaugural season in the shiny new stadium. And even if they try to tank, there’s no certainty that they can be the worst team in the league.
For this upcoming draft, Burrow, Tua and Herbert will be gone by the time the Raiders pick. If Tua checks out, he’s going to the Dolphins and even watch for the Lions, who may move on from Stafford after 2020. Herbert did extremely well at the Senior Bowl and he’s going top 10.
That means Love and Eason. All with risk. Not a great scenario unless you try to move up to pick #2 to get Tua, which is VERY expensive. Not great options. I’ve read Mayock was talking to Love at the Senior Bowl. It will be a very interesting 3 months.
I wish the Raiders just needed a QB. I say build the team 1st #1 and # 2 WR then Defense Defense Defense. I not convinced that the running QB is the answer but I will try anything at this point.
Carr is not ready to concede his job, which means 1) he’s not going to mentor his replacement 2) he’s not thick skinned enough to not feel threatened by an heir waiting in the wings behind him. No way Carr wants to stay if Raiders draft his successor.
I still don’t see how a sober, unemotional analysis of this team comes to the conclusion that Carr is the problem, or even a problem. If the Raiders have a kicker who could make chip shots they’re 9-7 easy. What if Williams doesn’t drop two perfect passes on the would-be game winning drive in Houston? What if the refs don’t screw up in the Jacksonville game, or twice in the Denver game?
Fix what’s broken: the defense and the WR corps.
Mr MadStork, I think you’re only sane voice left in this forum. I agree there are issues, but Carr isn’t one of them. The insanity is revealed by those suggesting they’d rather have Rivers or Brady instead of Carr. Really? Or that we should just start over with a new kid…any kid…so long as it’s not Carr. Like top 10 QBs grow on trees and are easily picked out of any draft class. Hard to fathom the short-sightedness of these views.
Thanks Matt. And by the way, I’m not saying he’s flawless. But good luck finding a flawless quarterback. 12-3 in 2016 tells me you can win with Carr if the defense can at least force some turnovers.
Agree. I think we’d all like to see him extend plays more with his feet, take off and run from time to time and keep defenses honest. That’s a whole new dimension to his game I think he can be really good at. And yes, a good defense alone will work wonders for this offense.
Stork and Matt I’m with you guys about carr, I’ve also defended him a lot on this website.
