Derek Carr’s status as the Raiders’ quarterback of the future remains in doubt. However, his spot as the second-best quarterback ever drafted by the Raiders is secure until he gets unseated. Given there’s a chance that head coach Jon Gruden and general manager Mike Mayock draft a quarterback in late April, RaidersSnakePit enlisted the expertise
Things to ponder over beers at the bar.
Gruden and Mayock have never picked a QB.
Our LV Raiders need a face of the franchise QB. A player that Gruden has complete faith in. A player who can lead, make all the calls, run the O and be that needed face of the franchise both on the field and off. Someone Gruden does not have to worry about going awol, being picked up for drunk driving or worse yet, domestic violence.
Gruden gets many of those traits from Carr. Except for the complete faith thing.
Illustrates just how much of a crap shoot the QB draft board really is….no matter how certain everyone may be about a given prospect. You never really know until they take the field. So do you walk away from a top tier QB in hopes that you get a higher top tier QB? Risky move….unless he falls into your lap.
Marc Wilson is likely the reason those mid-1980s Raiders teams never reached the Super Bowl (after Super Bowl 18). I can only imagine the criticism he would endure in today’s internet, 365 day sports coverage.
If you don’t have an elite QB, then the team around that “workable” QB has to be such as level to make the team playoff or even Super Bowl caliber. 49ers from this past season is case in point. However, that formula takes time, and is hard to keep going year after year when those players depart due to FA. If you have an elite QB, a team is nearly always in the playoff hunt. What does this mean? Keep searching. At this time, Raiders not only have to compete with Mahomes, but Lamar Jackson and DeShaun Watson as well in the AFC. Not easy.
