The Raiders found a starting cornerback in the second round in last year’s draft and could benefit greatly by finding another one in the upcoming draft. The problem is, round one might be too early for head coach Jon Gruden and general manager Mike Mayock to go that route, round three might be too late.
Agree, that the Raiders are going to try to get at least one second round pick. I just wonder since every team will understand the Raiders’ desire to get a second rounder, if the price will suddenly increase for them. I like the keeping the two first rounders and using two of the third rounders to move up and/or getting two second rounders.
So many teams are trying to trade down. You almost never get the full value. However, I do understand the need.
I would rather package the 3 three rounders to get into to the 2nd round.
You misspelled ore for or above. Not nitpicking of course, but you always want to know about the grammar.
Trading out of 19 seems to be the easiest answer for getting extra picks. The key is finding a team that covets a player. After that, its price.
I disagree with Ghost about trading all three rounders for a second. If that is what you meant Ghost. For two seconds, yes, but not for one. I dont think it will happen, but the three thirds for a late first rounder like 31 would be fine too, just because you get that optional 5th year. Again, coveting a player.
If Mayock and Gruden are enamored with Hurts, I can totally see them taking him at 19 if no trades materialize.
Going to go back over old ground but trading DC comes into this conversation as a second round pick (maybe alongside a five or six) would be a good price for Gruden to finally move on and end the QB questions every off- season about whether he has his guy.
Maybe what needs to be examined is .. Why did the Raiders Offense rank dead last in points scored in the 3rd quarter last year? The Raiders ranked 11th in the 1st quarter and 12th in the 2nd. Could it be that others teams make necessary adjustments at Halftime while the Raiders stand pat. A lot has been said about certain coaches ability to make halftime adjustments. Is there a team with a greater disparity between their offensive performances in the first half of games and that in the 2nd? I’d be willing to bet the answer is no. Can’t all be DC fault.
I have often questioned the lack of second half adjustments and am not for a moment saying everything is Carr’s fault. Our coaches really need to do better but Carr is a six year starter and is not blameless. I don’t think the coaches called the ridiculous fumble in Q3 of the Bears game last year, for example. The paper thin defense and distinct lack of genius from our DC feed into this part of the narrative as well.
I have said before that I have lost faith in Carr to become a top performer but that’s also irrelevant as what counts is how the coaches relate to the starting QB. Carr does not seem to be Gruden’s guy so it would make sense to move on with who Gruden wants, as he is in charge for the foreseeable future. Make the move for the best value you can get….
BTW, pleased to see DC saying he no longer wants to be friends with everybody but wants to win – as long as he delivers.
If he brings a Lombardi back for us, he doesn’t have to be my friend and i wont pretend to be his greatest fan but I will be grateful! Just deliver more than words this time….
When pointing out that Carr is a 6 year starting QB, it’s necessary to point out that he’s also had Greg Olsen, Bill Musgrave, Todd Downing, and now Gruden installing the offense and calling the plays. Certainly I might be way off base, but I think JG DOES have confidence in Carr and isn’t looking to replace him like most are speculating. I’m sure he wishes Carr would be more proactive in rushing the ball when the opportunity arises but Carr isn’t Rich Gannon when it comes to that. The Raiders last year had an offense designed for one of the best route running WR’s in football and right before game 1 that was blown to hell. How did Carr respond? He led the team to a 3-2 record with 1 home game. Gruden has many, many hours invested in DC – I have to believe if he didn’t have faith and confidence that Carr was the right QB to lead his team, he would have already made a more serious move to have a replacement ready. Finally – I think all this talk of drafting a QB is a smokescreen just like it was last year.
Spot on assessment. I 100% agree.
I think we will agree to disagree on a lot of things about Carr but I agree the changes in OC haven’t helped… huge mistake to get rid of Musgrave which has never been explained. Must be said that Olson came back with Gruden but of course JG runs the O as we all know.
On the AB focused offense, hard to argue but I worry if we draft a great route running receiver with our first pick this year and it doesn’t work out, we’ll be here in a year’s time making excuses for him just being a rookie and Carr needs another year…..
Gruden has been less effusive in his praise of Carr than he was of Mack…. what happened there?
On the drafting of a QB being a smokescreen, that may be the case but maybe Gruden already got his man in FA?
Enjoying the debate and if we stick with Carr, will still be rooting for the team: win, lose or tie… you know the rest!
I’d much rather move down with one of the 1st round picks and pick up the 2nd rounder. That way we still get two players in the 1st, one in the 2nd and three in the 3rd.
