The NFL has changed a great deal since Raiders head coach Jon Gruden’s first stint with the silver-and-black started more than 20 years ago. Yet, he still clings to many of the beliefs preached and used by late-owner Al Davis. In fact, Gruden’s current team is built in such a way that Davis would approve
Totally agree. Al Davis would have ABSOLUTELY picked Ruggs in the first round. No question. I don’t think Al would have picked Arnette based on his 40 time (at least the official time). However, Mayock said he had him timed at 4.4. So did I, when I timed him via the video on-line. Tanner Muse (H -W- S ratio) definitely fits what Al wanted. Simpson as a big offensive lineman, also an Al pick.
Dudes with attitudes are also Al’s guys. Robertson, Arnette, Abrams, Mullen all have attitudes and won’t back down. Reclamation projects like Incognito were a huge part of the Raider tradition.
Gruden keeps most of Al’s principles. He likes a massive offensive line. He wants to run the ball. Investment in the defensive line and secondary is clearly evident. The only difference:
-Gruden’s offense doesn’t stretch the field enough. Al wanted the QB to go deep. In Gruden’s first go around as coach, during a Gruden practice, the QBs were throwing short. Davis says to Gruden “why do we even have all this practice field? We could practice those routes in someone’s back yard.” I’m paraphrasing but that was the gist.
Yet, Mayock and Gruden are primarily following Al’s principles.
Correct on the lack of deep throws. I pointed that out in regard to Carr having the arm strength, just not going “vertical” enough to Al’s liking. Yeah, I recall more than a few of Al’s tirades at training camp when he didn’t like certain plays being run or the way players were being used. Classic stuff.
