The Kansas City Chiefs signed quarterback Patrick Mahomes to a monster contract extension Monday, which means life isn’t going to get any easier for Raiders head coach Jon Gruden and quarterback Derek Carr anytime soon. In fact, Mahomes is under contract to the Chiefs for 12 years based upon his new contract, though NFL players
Agreed. Carr hasn’t earned his money. Neither has Gruden.
All roads lead through Mahomes and the badlands of Kansas City. If they can’t beat KC, their only shot is a possible wild card entry into the playoffs (not a division crown)
Count me in on the neither Carr nor Gruden have earned their money. While at the time, I thought it a good idea to lock up Carr long term, I am now reminded of all of those who preached caution since Carr had only one good year (2016) under his belt. The same goes for Gruden, he was paid to bring glory back to the team and to repeat the success he had in his first stint.
Hopefully, both of these men up their game this season and show that the investment in them was not for naught.
At least if Carr doesn’t deliver he can be benched with Mariota ready to take over. Gruden is on the books for several years to come.
Read an article yesterday (not here) that said Gruden is one of 3 reasons for the Raiders to be optimistic as he is a superior coach, whatever fans think.
As a fan, I think coaches are superior when they bring the best out of players, show the ability to make adjustments through games or seasons and , to coin a phrase: just win some games (baby) .
As a fan I remain to be convinced about Carr & Gruden – a lot of money being spent here for not much reward so far…. but I’m just a fan.
I would also add to the superior coach list as able to correctly evaluate talent!!
Works for me, Michelle – another area yet to be proved!
The good news for the Raiders is, both Gruden and Carr have the potential to earn their money this season, if not beyond. Again, though, they have to do so and this has been much longer than anyone expected for it to happen. Hence, it’s acceptable, and expected, for Raider fans to be impatient.
