Say what you want about the late-great Al Davis’ preferred man-press bump-and-run defense. But watching the Las Vegas Raiders play an impotent version of Cover 2 zone and giving up the first down to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on 3rd & 13 — via dump-off of all things — makes you yearn for the pure man
Hmmmm…Gruden said yesterday they’d be making some adjustments to scheme, as well as personnel. Guess we’ll have to wait and see what that means. But at least that’s positive.
But the statement “ The Raiders offense is adequate” seems like throwing bit of shade. This is a top 10 offense through 6 weeks. Some credit is due for that, and I don’t think we’ve seen the ceiling yet.
+1
Excellent article, Ray, spot on. And there’s not going to be any coordinator change or trades befor the deadline. We’re suck with Gruden’s ‘we are who we are’ party line, which in practical terms means that playoffs are out of reach again.
And, just to add bit more detail – on 3rd-and-13, Joyner, Littelton and Morrow were lined up behind the 1st down marker, with everyone else further downfield! There was 14 yards of completely open field in front of Fournette! To label it ‘soft zone’ doesn’t quite do it – ‘prevent defense’ would be more adequate.
If Gruden fires Guenther (which he won’t), who could he realistically bring in next year to replace him? I think Gruden is running out of buddies to hire. And I don’t think any self respecting, up and coming DC would be keen to work with Gruden who I think is just a windbag.
Hiring Gruden was the biggest waste of money since people purchased Enron stocks. He will elevate the Raiders to mediocrity…but at least they won’t have the worst record in the league. Something to celebrate?
Hey I got stuck with Enron. So maybe my point has no Merit. 3-3 is a good start still 10 games to go. Let’s not make this a Tweeter sad sack site or do its your money
It’s fantastic that you are getting thoughts from this paragraph as well as from
