He was the full-time beat writer from 1997-2010. for the Contra Costa Times, Oakland Tribune and San Jose Mercury News and covered more than 400 NFL games, including four Super Bowls. He also is the co-author of a recently released book titled "Al Davis: Behind the Raiders Shield."

    My take on Guenther’s quote is not quite as cynical when kept in context of the entire statement. Seems more likely an attempt to help foster a bit of over-confidence in the opponent than making excuses in advance. The reality is, it WILL be a daunting task.

      No doubt. Just better to play with the players you have available and let the results speak. People understand if a team is short-handed because of injuries, Covid-19, whatever. Just as the Saints did the best they could without Michael Thomas, and the Browns without Chubb, Garrett and Beckham.
