Good pass rushers might be hard to find, but top-tier quarterbacks just might be in tall supply this offseason with today’s report that the Detroit Lions are prepared to trade Matthew Stafford. That report, courtesy of ESNP’s Adam Schefter, comes on the heels of news last week that quarterback Deshaun Watson might have played his
I continue to be amazed at how what’s so obvious continues to be missed by so many.
Short answer, no.
Detroit will be looking for some high draft choices in return. Would it move the needle forward to improve the Raiders’ chances of making the playoffs, then win it all? Very little if the Raiders continue playing a crap defense. On paper, Stafford and DC are about even, with a slight edge to Stafford. Otherwise, you are not improving the offense appreciably, and more so if Gruden continues calling a conservative game plan. Say, it’s a QB for QB trade, Stafford for DC, it leaves the Raiders presuming Stafford will sustain then improve offensive production while learning the Gruden playbook.
Answer: No
Stafford is not a significant upgrade over Carr.
I don’t think this would be good business – Stafford not a significant upgrade on Carr.
By the way, did I miss some news this week? Did the Packers bring in Guenther to run their defense – it played like ours in the first half of the NFC Title game…
This is the time when Carrs trade value is the highest it’ll ever be. With Gruden’s play-calling, Mariotta would be a more than adequate QB, kind of a better version of Gannon (and cheap at that), and would add an important extra dimension to the offense as a runner. Offensively, Raiders would loose very little, if anything, with him replacing Carr, and would gain far more in draft picks and cap space.
We could get a couple of draft picks – one in the first and another mid-rounder – for Carr and would save additional $19.6 million in cap space that could be well used to get a premier DE in free agency,
I would not trade for or try to get Stafford. Aaron Rodgers or Deshaun Watson would be a different story in my mind. Not sure Aaron Rodgers would want to come to a team that is forever rebuilding at this point in his career, but who knows?
