The Raiders offensive line has been the team’s strongest unit for the past five or six seasons. On Wednesday, separate reports said right guard Gabe Jackson is on his way out and right tackle Trent Brown might not be far behind. Raiders general manager Mike Mayock said in a conference call that Brown is a
I have no qualms about trying to trade or even cut Trent Brown. Mayock mentioned that Brown needs to stay committed and in shape? When you are openly applying those words to your 2nd highest paid player, that’s a real problem.
Mayock isn’t questioning Brown’s injuries, he’s questioning his commitment. Not good.
Regarding Jackson, he’s solid but not elite. Again, no issues jettisoning him if that frees up cap space. As long as there’s a suitable replacement.
Bingo. That’s not the first time that Mayock has gone that route on one of his players, either. Same with Gruden. Remember, they called out Damon Arnette earlier. These are the kinds of things that Gruden and Mayock should uncover as potential red flags before they sign or draft such players, especially when you’re talking about $16.5 million per season and a first-round draft pick.
I am kind of surprised to hear that Gabe Jackson is getting released. I thought he played himself out of that talk the last couple of years. I’m guessing that means that the team could not find a team who wanted to trade for Jackson. Hopefully, these moves does not mean that the Raiders take an offensive lineman with their first round pick this year.
Personally I wouldn’t jettison both. One or the other. If Jackson goes hold onto Brown…even though I think Brown isn’t a great teammate or locker room guy and is usually unavailable to play. Come to think of it, maybe they should move on from him. Haha
They better know what they are doing though. Mess up that oline and then the offence becomes a burden too.
Strange thing about the Gabe Jackson move is, they kept him in 2020 on the heels of a subpar season, then intend to cut him after a strong season, with the cap hit identical to last year.
Gabe was a revolving door season before last. He cleaned that up last year. But then run blocking fell off. Jacobs was running into walls at the line of scrimmage. At nearly 10M, this release makes perfect sense.
He should know he won’t touch that 10M with another team he signs with, so you’d think he’d be open to renegotiate his contract to stay with his teammates on the line. Never understood that.
