This Draft Digest series explores the prospects that can help the Raiders, and this second entry dives into the lack of consistent edge rushers in Las Vegas. The Raiders lack a must-account-for disruptive and true harrier of a quarterback that can maintain edge discipline, and that doesn’t bode well for Raiders first-year defensive coordinator Gus
Azeez Ojulari fits more of a 3-4 scheme. I can’t see him playing edge and the run effectively in a 4-3 scheme.
Stay away from Rosseau and Oweh. Rosseau has a lot of athletic ability, but a complete finesse player. Oweh will test very well but have very little production to show for it. BUST Meter HIGH.
I like Jaelan Phillips and Kwity Paye. Both can play the run and run the passer. One will be available when Raiders pick. Vikings will likely take one of them since they need an edge rusher. Phillips for instance, is a top 10-12 player yet has the injury history. He might be the first off the board. Paye can turn the corner (see his ridiculous 3 cone results) and can play with power.
I would agree with your assessment of those players. However, while they all may have a significant upside, none of them is going to be an instant help as they’ll all require patience with further development. To get immediate help in pass rush, Raiders will have to look for an edge rusher in free agency.
Additionally, a puss-rushing interior lineman, a.k.a. 3-technique DT, is a must. With Leonard Williams tagged by the Giants, as well as Edwards by the Bears, there’s not much to choose there in free agency. However, there is an excellent prospect in the draft that’ll likely be available at #17, C. Barmore, who could be an instant contributor.
